Victoria native, Ryder Hesjedal is still impressing Tour de France followers, maintaining his fourth-place overall position after the fifth stage of the cross-France cycling race.

Part of the Garmin-Transitions team, Hesjedal withstood blistering hot temperatures Thursday.

He placed 90th in a fifth stage that saw him cross the finish line with the same time as the lead group.

"Smoking hot out there today!" Hesjedal tweeted, referring to the 42.2 C temperatures.

The fifth stage ran 187.5 kilometres from Epernay to Montargis and was a mostly flat but extremely hot bike ride.

British sprint star, Mark Cavendish rode into Montargis capturing the day's top honours. It was his first victory of this year's Tour, after winning six stages in last year's competition.

Cavendish broke down in tears after claiming the victory. On Wednesday, he hurled his bike into a ditch in frustration after just failing to sprint first to the finish.

Toronto's Michael Barry sits 61st overall and is riding for Team Sky.

Meanwhile, Hesjedal will try to keep up the aggressive pace that won him the recognition as Most Aggressive Rider in stage three of the Tour on Tuesday.

The longest stage of this year's Tour is stage six, from Montargis to Gueugnon. Riders will cycle 227.5 kilometres on Friday.

Friday's weather forecast predicts humidity and temperatures reaching 35 C.

The Tour de France concludes on July 25 in Paris.
