The Vancouver Whitecaps FC unveiled their new logo Tuesday morning. The team will hit the field in 2011 sporting their newly vamped logo in the debut of Vancouver's Major League Soccer franchise.

"We've tried to combine the best of what this city brings to the people," said Paul Barber, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer. "I think the logo represents that very, very nicely with the Whitecaps in every single way."

The new logo features the famous Vancouver North Shore white-capped mountain tops standing tall on top of the club's name: Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The mountains reflect down on the city's waterfront in a sea blue mirror image. The blue colour is "Whitecaps blue" and represents the logo worn during the club's 1979 Soccer Bowl championship.

"With all logos, they tend to evolve over a period of time," said Barber.

The Whitecaps have seen various logos in team history.

From 1974 to 1984 the team competed in the North American Soccer League and wore two different logos. The first represented the Whitecaps as a Canadian soccer club.

A red and white soccer ball with a Canadian maple leaf in the centre and the team's name on top was the face of the Whitecaps until the second logo was unveiled.

The first Whitecaps logo makeover saw the red and white traded in for white and blue. The second face of the club brought a soccer ball carried by blue and white-capped waves into Vancouver.

In 1986, Canadian soccer celebrated a milestone in history with the men's national team finally gaining entry into the World Cup.

The excitement generated led to the creation of the Canadian Soccer League (CSL) and brought back a Vancouver franchise.

The Vancouver Eighty-Sixers wore a red and yellow coat of arms, up until the Vancouver team was reborn and back in blue and white.

The Whitecaps are being reborn again -- this time in the MLS when the team will start another chapter in team history.

"We needed to have a logo that was clean and efficient both on the jersey, on the screen, on paper and I think this is one the fans will be very proud to wear," said Barber.

Fans can get their hands on new Whitecaps swag as of today. New scarves and t-shirts are at the ready for any avid fan desperate to cheer for their future MLS club.

The Whitecaps also announced that 10,000 season-ticket deposits have been purchased and that more will go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. The club has set a soft cap on the amount of season-tickets that can be sold at 16,500.

Season tickets will start at $319, with a $50 deposit, for a minimum of 17 matches.
