CTV British Columbia took top honours at the coveted Radio-Television News Directors Association awards on Saturday night, winning four awards including Best Newscast.

The newsroom won the Bert Cannings Award for Best Newscast on July 19, 2009, for coverage of the tragic wildfires that set West Kelowna ablaze, resulting in the evacuation of 17,000 residents.

CTV covered the emergency from the ground and the air, delivering the latest to communities in the path of the flames and earning the station's third Best Newscast award in a row.

"We are extremely proud to be the recipient of three RTNDA awards, especially the award for Best Newscast for the third year running," said Tom Haberstroh, Vice President and General Manager of CTV British Columbia.

"What makes this accomplishment particularly gratifying is that each year we have been recognized for excellence during a major breaking story. Our strength during breaking news is what our viewers have come to rely on, and can continue to count on in the future."

The newsroom also won the Best Long Feature award for "Walk On," a five-part series about veteran reporter David Kincaid's knee surgery, and the Best Short Feature award for "Secrets of the Deep," which told the story of the British ship P514 that was accidentally sunk off the coast of Newfoundland in 1942.

CTV's First Story picked up the RTNDA's Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award for the second year in a row for "Olympic Resistance."

The RTNDA is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. It represents broadcasters in cable and other electronic media in more than 30 countries.
