Karen Weeks and her four children were overcome with emotion on Monday as they took their first steps back into their home after a $100,000 charity makeover.

Ten days ago, the home was suffering from electrical problems, bad ventilation and leaky windows that were causing mold. The condition was so bad it would make two of Weeks' children's asthma flare up.

But those problems are a thing of the past, thanks to the Aldergrove Seventh Day Adventist Church's outreach program. Every year, the church selects one lucky family to receive a free home makeover – and this year, it was the Weeks.

Dozens of volunteers worked for ten days straight fixing up the home starting on May 14. At 5 p.m. Monday, the Weeks family returned.

"Oh my god, you guys. You've got to see this," Karen Weeks told her children as she peeked inside. "Take your shoes off!"

Church volunteer Mira Evans said Weeks, a single mother, was picked this year for being "one of the hardest working women I know."

"She's got four kids and she's been working two jobs to keep her household running," she said.

And Pastor David Jamieson said Weeks and her children aren't the only ones who benefitted from the project.

"Every single person that's here is receiving a rich blessing out of this," he said. "To be able to do good without expecting anything in return, it changes our lives more than it changes the families' lives."

Project coordinator Lorne Brownmiller told CTV News that volunteers, including last year's home renovation recipient Joyce Myckatyn, have used an estimated $50,000 in supplies and $50,000 in labour fixing the house.
