Pit bull advocacy and rescue group HugABull steps in to help after 27 dogs were found in critical condition at a Surrey house Wednesday.
Surrey's animal control unit seized the dogs from the owners of a house that was undergoing city inspections after one dog had passed out from consuming a bag full of white power.
The dogs, 26 of 27 which were pit bulls, were taken to the SPCA.
The SPCA has since given 23 pit bulls in the facilities care to HugABull, where the dogs are now receiving treatment for various critical injuries.
"Some are completely bald and covered in scars and fresh wounds," director of HugAbull Sheila Begg told ctvbc.ca.
The dogs will be recovering at the shelter for about a month while the group tries to find homes for them.
"We have got to end the cycle," Begg said about abuse towards pit bulls. "Right now [pit bulls] are the breed that needs the most help."
HugABull is non-profit pit bull advocacy and rescue organization that has been running since 2003.
"I think it's a lot of people's misconception – it's the way these dogs are being perceived and it's not how it is all at," Begg said.
The incident is currently under investigation.
