A young White Rock resident is in stable condition after being critically injured in a backyard accident Sunday night.

Mounties say the seven-year-old was playing on a slide behind her home at 6 p.m. when a rope near the slide became tangled around her neck.

The child was airlifted to the BC Children's Hospital in critical condition. Today, authorities say she is conscious and her vital signs are stable.

Neighbours say they are shaken up by the incident.

"I feel sorry for the family," one woman told CTV News. "I hope they're getting through this and have a lot of support."

Investigators haven't said how long the girl may have been entangled.
