Prince Rupert RCMP are investigating the death of a 16-year-old female whose body was discovered on the town's waterfront Saturday afternoon.

Cpl. Jagdev Uppal says the victim was spotted by a passerby but police don't yet know what caused the teen's death.

"Our investigation is still in the very early stages and we are just going through the process of conducting a thorough investigation," Uppal said.

"Prince Rupert, being a very close tight-knit community, the death of any teenager is devastating for the entire community."

Uppal wouldn't confirm if police are treating the death as a homicide.

He said police have spoken with the victim's family, but RCMP have not yet released the teen's name.

Uppal said police are still conducting interviews and looking for witnesses.

"Members of the police have been on scene and conducted a thorough examination of the area and are now in the process of canvassing businesses in the area to possibly get further information and further leads," he said.

A number of units have been called in to assist with the investigation, including an RCMP forensic team.

Prince Rupert is located approximately 770 kilometres north of Vancouver.
