Some British Columbians flicked off their lights for Earth Hour, but the results are dimmer than the past two years.

BC Hydro says the province's electricity load dropped by 1.04 per cent between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday night, amounting to 64.6 megawatt hours of electricity.

That's less than the 1.1 per cent reduction in 2009 and two per cent reduction in 2008.

More than 80 communities said they were participating in the global campaign, with the rural north-central village of Burns Lake charting the highest with a seven per cent drop.

In Vancouver, the lights went off on the sails atop Canada Place and the giant globe at Science World, while in Victoria, the legislature also went dark.

In total, the province powered down the equivalent of about 1.4 million lights.
