Steel-toed boots have replaced speed skates at the Richmond Oval.

The Olympic venue provided some incredible and historic moments during the Games, but now workers are taking apart almost everything, including the ice.

The $178-million oval is being converted into a multi-purpose community centre that will include a 25,000-square-foot fitness facility, two international-size ice surfaces, eight basketball courts, a running track, volleyball courts and badminton courts.

It'll take several months to complete.

It's not the only Olympic venue that will undergo a complete transformation.

After the Paralympic Games are done, the curling facility near Queen Elizabeth Park -– where Kevin Martin snagged gold for Canada this past weekend -– will be turned into an $85 million community centre.

It'll have a curling rink, NHL-size hockey rink, library, a 66,000-square-foot fitness and aquatic centre, and after-school care.

The fitness centre is set to open this summer. The rest of the complex is slated to open in the summer of 2011.
