It's a major milestone for Canadian television news.

CTV British Columbia on Monday became the first television station in western Canada to broadcast news in full high definition.

The station joins CTV National News and a full complement of CTV programming airing in full HD.

From the field to the studio, local news broadcasts in Canada's second-largest market, airing weekdays at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and weekends at 6 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., will all be aired in HD.

"Today's move to HD makes B.C.'s best and most awarded newscast even better," Tom Haberstroh, Vice President and General Manager of CTV British Columbia, said.

"We're proud to be the first newscast in the province to be fully HD."

CTV was the first national conventional broadcaster to launch high definition services in November 2003. CTV British Columbia is the second local CTV market to make the move to HD on June 1, 2004, after CTV Toronto.

CTV British Columbia began over-the-air HD transmission on some of its most popular shows in August 2005.

Our HD signal, identified as "CTV HD West," is transmitted from North Vancouver's Mount Seymour.

How to find CTV British Columbia HD Newscasts:

Note: in order to receive over the air (OTA) HDTV, you must have a high definition receiver and indoor or outdoor UHF antenna which should be pointed towards Mt. Seymour (location of transmitter). However, your location, topography and the type of antenna will all have an impact on the ability to receive this service.  

If you live outside Metro Vancouver and are frustrated because you cannot find CTV British Columbia's HD channel on your local cable provider, you are not alone. We have received numerous letters on this issue. Cable companies are only obligated to carry our HD signal if our over-the-air transmission reaches that particular market. CTV British Columbia's HD over-the-air signal does not reach Vancouver Island, the Interior, or Northern B.C.  Carriage of our signal is therefore discretionary for the provider. We would encourage you to contact your local cable provider directly to voice your concerns.
