Coquitlam RCMP have determined the vicious sexual assault of a teenager over the weekend was not a targeted attack.
At about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, a 15-year-old girl was walking on Kingsway Avenue near the Port Coquitlam bus loop when she was approached by an unidentified male.
She was then pushed into the bushes and assaulted.
On Sunday, investigators confirmed the attack was a random act of violence.
"This is nothing short of a cowardly act by the suspect," Sgt. Peter Thiessen told ctvbc.ca. "No 15-year-old girl should have to go through something like this."
The victim was taken to hospital with significant injuries. She was released Saturday morning.
The RCMP major crimes section and forensic identification team are currently investigating the assault.
One suspect has been identified.
He is described as a tall, muscular Caucasian male in his 30s. He was wearing blue jeans with a large belt buckle, a white t-shirt and a grey hoody with the hood drawn.
Another man, who approached the victim before she was attacked, is also being sought by investigators. He is described as "typical" looking with a deep voice and a Canadian accent. He had prominent cheek bones and was balding.
"At this point, we are not putting that person in the classification of a suspect," Theissen said. "We are hoping to speak to him as a person of interest."
Anyone with information on the attack is asked to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550.
