A 24-year-old man is in hospital after being shot by an RCMP officer in Smithers, B.C.

On Saturday morning around 12:30 p.m., an RCMP officer spotted a truck matching the description of a stolen vehicle.

The truck was pulled over, but when the officer tried to remove the driver from the truck, the vehicle accelerated - dragging the officer with it.

The officer fired his gun, hitting the driver.

Const. Craig Douglass told ctvbc.ca that so far, details of the shooting are sparse.

"They haven't determined how many shots were fired," Douglass said.

"Those details are likely not going to be released until the conclusion of the investigation."

The extent of the victim's injuries is also currently unknown.

"We are unaware of the condition, except that he's currently in medical care in the Lower Mainland," Douglass said.

"We're as concerned as anybody on that."

The shooting is currently being probed by the Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP.

An internal investigation, led by an outside officer from the Saanich Police Department, is also being conducted.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Smithers RCMP at 250-847-3233 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
