Opposition MPs slammed the Harper minority government Thursday during Question Period over the fact that 2010 Vancouver Olympic torch-relay celebrations are being held primarily in Conservative ridings.

As CTV News first reported Wednesday, government documents show torch celebrations are being held in 91 Conservative ridings across the country, way more than the 20 planned for Liberal ridings and 17 each for NDP and Bloc ridings.

"How could any government be so inappropriate, so grossly unfair?" asked Liberal MP Ken Dryden.

"How is it possible that such a big-spirited country could have such a small-minded government?"

In January, the torch will snake its way around B.C. before arriving in Vancouver for the opening ceremonies.

In B.C., there are 22 Conservative ridings, eight NDP ridings and five Liberal ridings.

Thirty-two celebrations are planned in Conservative ridings, meaning some ridings will get more than one party. Nine are being held in NDP ridings and none are planned in Liberal ridings.

"It is very skewed," Liberal MP Hedy Fry told reporters outside the House. "It isn't equal. The Conservatives should fix it."

But the government has no such plans.

"This torch relay route was designed 100 percent, 100 percent by Vanoc, not the government, by Vanoc," said Heritage Minister James Moore.

Olympian-turned-Conservative Senator Nancy Greene, who was onstage at a Paralympic event Thursday, held the party line.

"That's absolutely not true, the whole relay route was chosen by Vanoc and Vanoc alone," she said.

Vancouver Organizing Committee CEO John Furlong has also denied any government or political interference in choosing the locations of torch celebrations.
