Kelowna's Major Crimes Unit is investigating the city's third homicide of 2009 after the death of a man in a park early Tuesday.

The victim was found clinging to life in Mill Bridge Park just after 2 a.m.

"The adult male involved that is known to police was transported to the Kelowna hospital by ambulance where he died upon arrival," Const. Steve Holmes told CTV News.

Police have not officially released the cause of death. People living close to the park report hearing gunshots.

"There was five of them, like 'bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,'" Lynne Jensen said. "And just 150 feet from my bedroom."

This is the second homicide in a week in the Interior city. On Oct. 21, a 38-year-old man well known to police was found dead outside of a home on Birth Avenue. A woman was arrested in connection with the incident. She remains in police custody until her next court appearance Nov. 6.

Kelowna recently topped a recent report from the Community Foundations of Canada that compared the numbers of violent crimes to the population in 16 cities across the country.

Anyone with information about the homicides is asked to call the Kelowna Detachment at 250-762-3300, or Crimestoppers 1-800-222-8477.
