Vancouver police issued a public warning Sunday morning after a local woman was violently sexually assaulted while walking through a west side park.

Authorities say she was attacked by an unidentified male at about 12:30 a.m. in Hastings Mill Park, located next to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on Point Grey Road.

"He repeatedly punched her, multiple times in the head and face, then dragged her towards the centre of the park," Const. Jana McGuinness said.

A violent struggle ensued as the assailant sexually assaulted the victim. Police say the woman was eventually able to fend off her atacker, who then fled the scene southbound on Highbury Street.

The victim sustained significant facial injuries and bruises, McGuinness said.

"Obviously this is a violent and traumatic event," she said. "There will be an emotional toll -- no doubt for many weeks, and potentially even longer."

The suspect is described as 5-5 to 5-8 tall, medium-skinned with a medium build and speaking in a distinctly British accent. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and jeans, with a handkerchief over his face.

Investigators are currently looking into any possible connection to the death of Wendy Ladner-Beaudry in April.

Ladner-Beaudry was found on a path in Pacific Spirit Park, just kilometers from Sunday's crime scene. Her killer was never identified.

McGuinness called on the public to exercise caution, and outlined a number of safety suggestions for residents including:

  • Walk with a partner
  • Carry a cell phone
  • Stick to well-lit routes
  • Let someone know where you are

"These are just minor steps, but they can be really helpful in dissuading a serious attack," she said.

Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the event to contact them immediately at 604-717-2634.
