Vancouver's monthly Critical Mass bike rally is set to get underway at 6:00 p.m. tonight.

The ride, which attracted as many as 3,000 bikers last month, is set to begin at the Vancouver Art Gallery at 6:00 p.m.

As usual, Vancouver police officers will be monitoring the event on motorcycle and bicycle.

Police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness told ctvbc.ca Friday that the department has been talking to event organizers to try to get them to establish a pre-determined ride route.

That would help to reduce tension between motorists and cyclists, and help police deploy officers to facilitate traffic flow, she said.

But so far, no commitment has been made to establish a pre-determined route.

That said, "we're pleased they're coming to the table," McGuinness said, adding the department is hopeful talks will continue.

Last month's Critical Mass event caused traffic to come to a standstill in sections of downtown Vancouver, as well as the Lions Gate Bridge.

But McGuinness said there was a "significant reduction" in confrontations between motorists and cyclists.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, an avid cyclist, has stated that he does not support the event in its current configuration and would like to see it more of a "celebration."
