A flatbed truck struck a mother pushing a stroller on Wednesday afternoon, in a heartbreaking accident that has left a two-year-old girl dead.

The accident occurred on the corner of Abbott Street and Expo Boulevard, near GM Place in downtown Vancouver.

Const. Jana McGuinness confirmed that the young girl died at the scene. The 32-year-old mother remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

Police say the mother was pushing the stroller across the intersection when the pair were struck by a truck making a right turn from Abbott Street onto Expo Boulevard. Images from CTV's Chopper 9 Wednesday afternoon showed the child lying next to a stroller beneath a white tarp.

The driver of the truck and a number of witnesses were interviewed at the police station, while the VPD Collision Investigation Unit and the B.C. Coroners Service investigated.

Rejoice Kryzanowksi, who lives near the intersection, said she couldn't believe her eyes.

"I saw the mother. I almost dropped . It could've been me," she said. "This corner is very dangerous."

Jordan Kryzanowski saw the immediate aftermath.

"I heard all the commotion... I ran out on the balcony. I saw the stroller flipped over. The worst thing goes through your head," he said.

"For parents trying to get around the city with a stroller, it's very much a challenge."

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the VPD Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.
