New details surrounding Saturday's airtanker crash have come to light thanks to home video footage shot by one Kelowna resident -- who also helped rescue the plane pilot's life.

Fraser Hall was on Okanagan Lake filming planes as they prepared to douse the forest fire burning in West Kelowna, when he noticed something strange: A water bomber with it's landing gear down.

Moments later, the plane hit the lake and flipped over.

"It was quite a nightmare to watch," Hall said. 'The rear wheels catch and then just cartwheel, the one pontoon comes off and the thing just cartwheels through the water."

Hall has already been ordered to evacuate his home because of the fire, but luckily for the pilot of the crashed plane, he refused.

Instead, Hall and his father were there to help haul the stunned aviator from his sinking aircraft.

"The plane sunk within 10 seconds of getting the pilot out," he said. "It sunk to the point where it was just the tail. So he would have been firmly underwater."

The plane then sank straight to the bottom of the lake - but not without leaving it's mark. Darren Muntak of Vernon Search and Rescue says fuel has been visible on the shore.

"You can clearly smell it, and it's something that people around here want dealt with sooner rather than later"

Conair, the company that operates the aircraft, says they'll pull the plane out within a week - but Muntak says that's not soon enough.

"I've been talking to all the environmental people to get someone out here," Muntak said. "I'm thinking of doing it myself."
