A 35-year-old student pilot died when the helicopter he was flying crashed in southeastern B.C. near Creston on Wednesday, the RCMP has confirmed.

Search and rescue crews found the wreckage of the helicopter in the Kootenay River with the remains of the pilot still inside. He was the sole occupant of the Robinson R-44 helicopter.

An RCMP dive team was working on Wednesday to retrieve the body of the pilot, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The location of the crash is an area of heavy bush, swampland and numerous small waterways, police said.
