A Surrey, B.C., man is speaking out after being stabbed with a samurai sword in a local park in what he calls an unprovoked attack.
The 26-year-old man, who doesn't want to be identified, required more than 30 staples to close the wounds in his stomach.
He and his 21-year-old girlfriend were walking through Bear Creek Park near 88 Avenue and King George Hwy. shortly after midnight Friday when they were confronted by two men, one armed with a sword.
One of the men kicked his girlfriend while the other yelled at them.
"He asked if I wanted to die tonight, and that's all I heard," she said.
While he was trying to defend her, the man was stabbed in the arm and the stomach with a large sword.

After the stabbing, the two men got into a dark-coloured sedan on 88th Avenue and drove away.
The victim was transported to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, where he underwent surgery.
"It's sad when I can't walk home through Surrey without being worried about getting stabbed for absolutely no reason," he said.
"I have a 15-month-old girl at home that I need to go home to every night and when I have to deal with stuff like this, it's stupid. What if I were to die and my kid would grow up without a father?"
The attackers are described as two South Asian men both in their early 20s. One of the men is heavyset.
Before the attack, Surrey RCMP say the couple had an argument with two men at a nearby pizza restaurant.
"Sounds as though some kind of verbal altercation took place," Sgt. Roger Morrow said.
"The two men wanted to engage in a fight and they declined."
Morrow believes the men followed the pair to Bear Creek Park, where the stabbing occurred.
"It doesn't appear they knew their attackers," Morrow said.
Surrey RCMP are now working with investigators to see if there is any video footage of the incident.
