The Law Society of B.C. wants the public to know the name of a lawyer who was convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Harold Garrett Power was convicted in May of this year and has since given up the ability to practise law, but a publication ban has until now prevented the society and the media from naming him.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has lifted the ban, prompting the law society to send out a news release revealing Power's identity to "protect the public."

Within days of his conviction, the society says Power resigned his membership and, as a result, gave up the right to practise law in B.C.

The society says such information would typically be posted on its website as a notice to the public, but the publication ban prevented that from happening for two months.

In addition to his conviction, the society says during his trial, Power admitted to lying on his original application to the Law Society to practise law in B.C.
