Nine people are now confirmed dead in recreational accidents following a treacherous Victoria Day long weekend in British Columbia.

A 20-year-old man drowned Sunday morning in Sugar Lake, east of Lumby, B.C., in the North Okanagan after his canoe flipped.

Three young men were in the canoe and one managed to swim about 50 metres to shore but the second man died making the same attempt.

A third man hung onto the craft and was rescued.

Four people, including a six-year-old boy drowned on B-C waterways over the long weekend, while another four were killed in vehicle crashes and a 46-year-old hiker died in a fall east of Vancouver.

RCMP in Langley, B.C. also report the body of a 27-year-old man was found early Sunday morning in a local park but they have not determined a cause of death, although they say it does not appear suspicious.
