They say that many hands make light work, but there's nothing light about a project to give a $70,000 home renovation to an Aldergrove mother -- absolutely for free.

The project is being run by the Aldergrove Seventh Day Adventist Church, who picks a family once a year and overhauls their home, similar to the hit show "Extreme Home Makeover."

This year the honour is being bestowed upon Joyce Myckatyn, a single mom with four kids.

"I'm feeling pretty special right now," Myckatyn said.

The mother has brought her brood to her brother's home in Stony Plain, Alberta, for 10 days while her home is completely made over.

She admits the last few weeks have been very emotional.

"It's excitement," she said. "There'll be tears of joy when I think about what's going on."

She was nominated for "Acts of Kindness" project by her sister and was chosen as much for what was done to her home as what wasn't.

A lot of work in the home has been accomplished by the hard work of Myckatyn and her boys.

"We've done the drainage we've done the roofing -- most of the drainage was dug by hand by myself and my kids," she said.

Pastor Francis Douville says the congregation has been very impressed by what Joyce and her boys have done to make the house "as livable as possible."

"We wanted to address some of the aesthetics that they wished they could that would have taken years and years to afford," he said.

And just what those improvements are is quite impressive. New walls, new floors, new bathrooms and kitchen -- all on donated time and materials.

"It took me awhile to sort of grasp and understand these people were coming and doing this on volunteer basis," Joyce said.

This Sunday, Douville will welcome the family home. This is the sixth time he's transformed lives by transforming a home.

"We have a whole team of people preparing the reveal," Douville said. "And it's gonna be a reveal."

"We are gonna greet this family home and I know they're gonna be amazed by the change it's gonna be a huge difference."

The mother of four says the experience is overwhelming.

"I don't know how to express my appreciation," she said.

But Francis says she doesn't have to.

"They have given us more than we ever can give them, in the spirit that they have and the family that they have," Douville said.

"Church is more than sitting in a pew. This is church right here. Spending time with a hammer or a drill and making a difference in someone else's life."
