Police have blocked off the area around an elementary school in East Vancouver after finding a body of a man in the school yard.

The grim discovery was made at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday by parents who were dropping off their kids at the Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School in the Joyce Street and Kingsway area.

It has prompted a homicide investigation, according to the Vancouver Police Department, which has described the incident as "suspicious."

Police are waiting for an autopsy to confirm the identity of the victim and the cause of death.

Students were sent home this morning after classes were cancelled. The school remains closed and traffic is also being affected as McKinnon St. has been blocked off from 41st Ave. to Kingsway.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver School Board released the following statement Thursday in connection with the incident.

"Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School will not be open today due to a police investigation. Students arriving at the school this morning will be turned away,'' the statement said.

Mr David Wier of the Vancouver School Board can be contacted at 604-345-0177 for information regarding the school closure.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 604-717-2500, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
