An up-and-coming Vancouver cardiologist and his fiance were named as the couple killed Saturday night. They were hit by an SUV near Granville Island as they walked home from a night out.

Thirty-one-year-old cardiology resident Dr. Aneez Mohamed was already teaching medical students and was described as "a rising star" by colleagues. His fiance was 25-year-old Chanelle Morgan.

The couple had become recently engaged.

Both died at the scene after being hit by an 18-year-old man who is suspected of drunk driving and speeding. The man ran off on foot and was later found by police in False Creek.

While he has not yet been formally charged, CTV News has confirmed that he is Kurtis Rock from B.C.

"[Dr. Mohamed] was supposed to be teaching today at 4 p.m. We were waiting for him," said Dr. Karim Quyumi of the UBC Centre of Excellence for Surgical Education and Innovation.

"I am angry, I am sad and I am mad. Everybody loved him, his personality was outstanding and his level of knowledge, passion toward teaching others. He was a rising star and I think the whole of B.C. and Canada should be very sad and mad about this issue."

The driver who hit the couple is facing seven charges.

"At this point, he'll be facing two counts of failing to remain the scene of an accident, two counts of dangerous driving causing death, two counts of impaired driving causing death and one count of driving over," said Const. Jana McGuinness of the Vancouver Police.

"This young man will live with this for the rest of his life."

John Banovich was nearly killed by a drunk driver 12 years ago. He says young people still don't seem to get the message.

"It's horrific, It's unbelievable that this sort of incident is still occurring," he said.

"They're in that category where you know drinking and driving collisions don't seem that tangible and the question is always asked -- will this happen to me well, it probably won't."
