High-tech driver's licences will soon make their debut in British Columbia to help prevent identity theft and fraud.
Solicitor General John van Dongen said Friday the new licences will be hard to forge or get under false names.
"Driver's licences are widely trusted as ID and, when tampered with, can cost people, business and financial institutions millions of dollars each year," van Dongen said in a statement.
Security features will include facial recognition technology that analyzes facial characteristics that do not change, such as the size and location of cheekbones and the distance between the eyes.
The technology does not include collecting any new information about drivers, van Dongen said.
"The use of facial recognition technology has been reviewed for privacy implications and has been found to meet the requirements of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act."
The high-tech licences will include counterfeit-prevention devices like holographic overlays and laser-engraving or raising of features like the cardholder's image and signature.
The cards will also provide additional information for cardholders under age 19, so it will be easier for police and retailers of alcohol, tobacco and lottery products to quickly verify a person's age.
Sgt. Rick Koop of the RCMP's B.C. Commercial Crime Section said the secure cards will be difficult for criminals to counterfeit.
B.C. is joining other provinces and 30 U.S. jurisdictions by introducing the licences, which will be issued starting March 2 to drivers who apply for a new, renewed or replacement card.
A year ago, B.C. began issuing what it calls one of the world's most high-tech birth certificates, with more than 20 security features.

so does this mean I don't have to wait in that horrific passport lineup to travel to America the Beautiful? |
|
hmmmmm Cameras on every street corner. License's with every thing from date and time of birth to your last bowel movement. Next will be a little tinny chip inserted in the back of your head. Can everyone say: Big Brother! Welcome to your future children :) |
|
It used to be that the police watched over the people, now they're just watching the people. |
|
Ya! and I bet it will be a lot easier for the fed. to track you too. Kinda reminds me of Germany...von you papers please! |
|
Of course if someone already stole your identity, they will be able to make the complete transition into YOU when THEY get their face in the system before you. (By using your SIN# and other ID to get BCDL) We need DNA identification from birth, then in 100 years identity theft will be a thing of the past. |

For what it's worth I heard them talking about this on the radio yesterday. And they did say THIS IS NOT the high tech solution to going into the USA.Nor does it contain enough of the information that would be required to replace a passport. It is simply another drives licence with improved security features,Nothing more. |

wow , more human rights violated, masked behind identity theft? now i see what bush was really doing up here! all this N.W.O. stuff is actually , year by year being forced on us, and theres nothing we can do but take it in stride , notice everytime some "terrorist" attacks we lose more rights? time to look into what they're really up too. |

I see you people complaining about the added security. As far as I'm concerned, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. So what if the Government gets some extra info? What can they DO with it? Again, if you have nothing to hide... |
|
Some of you people make me laugh! You're more concerned that "Big Brother" will catch you scratching your left cheek while waiting to cross the street than you are preventing crooks from obtaining a credit card in YOUR name. |
|
ya we'll see in the future , wizard , when theyre dictating how many kids you can have , which in turn ,like china, will have parents throwing away their daughters in hopes of a son. next thing you know , all these throw aways end up in brothels and what not. and guys like you that have nothing to hide can actually get laid so...for every action , there is a reaction |
|
What facial recognition will be required for those who cover their faces for "religious"reasons? |
|
Just a pre-cursor of national ID cards. More info here: http://www.discovery.org/a/4191 |

i read many comments about big brother's intrusion on our lives. i agree completely, governments are asking too much but my question to you is this... did you cast your vote and ask for this government? if you forgot to vote, then it is your inaction that is giving the government all this control over our lives! thanx but no thanx, is there a way to just get a normal everyday driver's license in this province? |

To the Wizard: Look up you're history my friend that's exactly what Hitlers Germany and Stalin's Russia said!!! The world was short about 6.0 million Jews later that really had nothing to hide either. |
