Two children killed in a multi-car pile-up on the Trans-Canada Highway south of Nanaimo have been identified.

Seven-year-old Lucas Bekkers and his two-year-old brother, Cooper, died on Monday when the Ford Escape driven by their mother veered out of control on snowy roads.

The SUV crossed from the northbound lanes into the oncoming southbound traffic, hitting several other vehicles.

Two other children in the SUV were injured, along with the dead children's mother, 35-year-old Clare Bekkers.

Police have said they were investigating speed, road conditions and possibly alcohol as factors in the crash.
