Two Vancouver police officers were given a Hollywood makeover that turned them into "bait seniors" in order to catch suspects responsible for a string of violent robberies on the elderly in the Downtown Eastside.

Insp. Tim Hadler and Sgt. Toby Hinton were dressed up as old men, using canes, walkers and wheelchairs as props with the aim of looking vulnerable to attack.

Insp. Hadler, in his 60s, is the oldest officer in the VPD with 36 years' experience and a black belt in judo. Sgt. Hinton, 30 years young, used a heavy make-up and rubber mask disguise to change his appearance.

The operation, dubbed Project Oldtimer, began in August after an investigation revealed there had been 69 street robberies on the elderly in 2007, with 80 per cent in the Downtown Eastside.

Police say the victims in the poverty-stricken Downtown Eastside were elderly men who were approached from behind and robbed and assaulted if they resisted. Many had conditions like Parkinson's disease, mental illness, cancer or dementia, and were unable to defend themselves.

Insp. Adam Palmer says many suffered broken ribs, hips or hands while others had fractures to their ankles or cuts to their head.

"[The robberies were] an attack on their dignity, self-confidence, and sense of security and it can negatively affect them for them for the rest of their lives," said Palmer.

The makeup transformed the officers and was highly successful, with the police department arresting 10 people and laid 12 charges following the operation.

The suspects are mostly drug-addicted men who were preying on seniors for wallets, cash and other valuables.

On Thursday afternoon police named the eight suspects charged with robbery in the case. They are Ryan MacGregor, 30, Kevin Weinmeister, 42, Joseph Mathieu, 53, Romana Plocek, 44, Travos Stewart, 29, Podromos Hadgialexioy, 46, Leroy Sellars, 39, and Marlon Watts, 32.

good going guys!, There is nothing more low than preying on the elderly. Being someone who used to reside on the Downtown Eastside, I've seen alot of the drug addicted people who prey on the weak, who are unable to defend themselves and who are fearful in reporting such crimes.
Maybe the ones who are arrested should be made public so that we may know who they are.

The media and police should be allowed to show the public who these low-lifes are,and maybe embarrass these low-lifes into moving far, far away....like into the Fraser River.

Good work VPD. You should be doing this sort of thing every day instead of busting people for doing 20 over on Knight Street. Get your priorities straight.

I could imagine what was going through the robber's minds when they got their ass kicked by a "90-year-old" man. LOL

Outstanding. Thats what I'm talking about, take the fight to the real bad guys that are out there preying on the weak. Brings a smile to my face to think of the robbers thinking that they are holding up 70 year olds, only to find that they have a 30-year-old black belt cop. Truly excellent, Merry Christmas bad guys hahaha

Kudos to the police for catching these low lifes. It's hard to even find the words of what I think of people like - well none that would make it past the censors anyway! I look at my mom and see how vulnerable she is now and just want to protect her. Shame on them and I hope they throw the book at them -actually the entire book shelf would be better!

Brilliant!
Also, instead of clogging the jails with these low-life losers who prey on the elderly, poor & infirm, how 'bout some form of restorative justice? Say, 1,000 hrs per offense of community service in Downtown Eastside, or something equally useful?
In any case, well done VCR City Police!

What would posses someone to rob the vulnerable. Why doesn't anyone ask the tough questions? As commendable as these actions are, they do not address the likely underlying poverty, mental health, and addiction issues involved.

These drug addicts are also victims.
Society should help support them and cure them, then they will not have to rob people to support a drug addiction.

Good work. If they really enjoyed that kind of under cover work, they can open another left wing sponsored Vancouver government approved shooting gallery. Then crime will double with more wasted skin filling up the east side and making forays into the downtown to panhandle, beg, burgle and mug the old and infirm. Yep this is exactly why Vancouver needs a 'safe' injection site. So the waste product junkies can make the rest of society un-safe.

Atta boy Tim, you make excuses for the scum. It's obvious your heart bleeds for criminals. Get a life, poverty is no excuse for crime.

i personally think all of you guys are pathetic. haven't you realized the perps here deserve our help too? If you find an abused dog trained to kill, you feel sorry for it, but you see an abused man, no longer in control of his morality, and you hate because you're a human and society says you're better than him. This will never end, we have to help these men get healthy happy minds again, lock them up and throw away the key at your own expense, and the expense of society when they walk out 10x warped than before

Awesome, maybe other law enforcement officers around the country should follow suit.

I am sick and tired of hearing that the weak, the tired and the elderly are being beaten and robbed.

High time that Canada allowed our officers to do their jobs without criminals being allowed to scream entrapment.

Lets get some pedophiles off the streets. Clean up some gangs and arrest some dopers.

A big pat on the back for Vancouver police. Great Job

This is the kind of police work that gives real value to the tax dollars spent. When I see someone rotting in jail for smoking leaves, it makes me sick that I am helping to pay for that. But when I see the innocent being protected, and justice being served it reminds me what police are supposed to be and why we have them. Good work guys. Keep it up!

Excellent and creative work.
Now our justice system needs to become excellent and creative to keep these persons from re-offending.

G Rock if you don't speed you won't get busted for 20 over on Knight St.

Why should speeding be ignored, both speeding and attacks on the elderly can bring serious consequences to innocent victims!

Book 'em Dano!

Finally - police doing something other than using the taser on people for a change. It also sounds like an episode from law and order or matlock.

Sounds like entrapment to me, if they were not dressed up and creating a chance for a crime to happen the set up would not happen. Same goes for dressing up as prostitutes, bait cars, phony drug dealers.

Here's hoping the officers had reason and sufficient time to "tune up" on these disgusting slimeballs. You see, the pillory really isn't that bad of an idea! I would happily supply several hours worth of pelting material.

When I first moved to Vancouver, I worked in the Downtown Eastside. I was ready for the poverty, the drug crime, the prostitution. But what really broke my heart were the area's elderly residents, walking the streets alone, poor, weak, sometimes sick of body and/or mind and/or life. It was really hard for me to think of those people being attacked, when they already have so little in life and struggle to get by. This may be a drop in the bucket compared to all the the crap that goes on down there, but it's a very important drop. Kudos to the VPD for being wise enough to see the need, innovative enough to come up with this and courageous enough to pull it off. Many of Vancouver's poor elderly will end up owing you their lives.

It's a real shame they don't still have a stockade in the town square for that bunch of guys that were robbing the elderly -- because given the history of the legal systems completely ineffectual response to such crimes -- I am sure they will suffer far less than any of their victims, when all is said and done.

Great job guys!! We're all very proud of you.
Although they deserve all the kudos they're getting, it's too bad we needed to public with this strategy - just think of how many more of those low-lifes we could have nabbed.

Good job guys. Wasting your time and taxpayers' money. After spending a lot of money taking them to court they may get 10 days probation. What a beautiful justice system we have.

This is great, the police have made the streets safer for all of us, but for how long? If the past is any indication, will we see these men out on the streets again in a couple of weeks. Drug addicts choose to break the law to feed their addictions, can we choose to keep them incarcerated?

This is good news. I am glad to hear that his is working. They should be using this in other areas of the lower mainland, particularly near skytrain stations such as 29th, Joyce, and Nanaimo, where a lot of elderly women are getting their purses snatched. And anywhere else there is a large volume. Lets nab these jerks. On drugs or not, you never prey on the most vulnerable. People with Parkinson's, Cancer, Dementia, seriously makes me want to become a vigilante. I have elderly family members with all three conditions and if they were ever victimized, you'd be sure I would hunt down the bastards who did this. Keep up the good work VPD!

Excellent work. Now we have to support it by ensuring that our Crown counsel don't plea bargain away and our judges don't put these scum back on the street. There's a special place in hell for people who prey on people weaker than themselves - and in heaven for the cops who stop it. ...Interesting, though, to contrast this with the attitudes toward protecting women... Guess the boys know they'll be old some day...
