Vancouver's newly elected mayor Gregor Robertson, along with his council, was sworn in at a ceremony at a community centre on Monday.

The former NDP MLA for Vancouver Fairview and Happy Planet juice company owner wore a kilt and was piped in by bagpipes for the ceremony.

Expectations are high for Robertson after the Olympic Village controversy and lofty campaign promises he pledged during the election.

After taking his oath of office, Robertson addressed those assembled with his inaugural speech.

"Today has brought city hall into the community and for the next three years, we will bring the community back into city hall," he said.

He did not shy away from his number one issue during the campaign, homelessness.

"If our vision of Vancouver is to become a reality homelessness must end. And I tell you today that it will end."

Robertson has committed to ending street homelessness by 2015. And that's not the only promise the new mayor has to keep.

"Our list of promises is certainly long -- we've got a lot of commitments to fulfill but we've got a lot of energy and a lot of determination to do that."

Robertson said the new council would have an in-camera meeting this week to look at the Olympic Village issue.
