A man found dead inside a dumpster at a recycling facility in Surrey was likely crushed to death, according to workers.

Employees came across a body while processing cardboard at the Metro Waste Paper Recovery Plant shortly after 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

It was amongst material from a dumpster picked up in the North Surrey area.

"My operator came and got me and said there was a body," says plant supervisor Todd Newman. "I ran over and saw a body was there. I called the police and they came down for their investigation."

The unidentified male is believed to be in his early 40's.

The plant supervisor says the drivers always bang on the dumpsters to make sure no one is inside.

In this case, he says the person likely didn't wake up in time before the dumpster was lifted into the truck and crushed. It is still unclear if the man was brought to the site by one of the recycling trucks.

The B.C. Coroner's Service is investigating.  The death is being treated as suspicious.
