A nationwide event that encourages students to harass kids based on the colour of their hair is garnering serious attention from anti-bullying groups and parents.
The Facebook event "National Kick a Ginger" day has almost 4,700 members across Canada and has sparked a rash of opinions in support and against on the social networking site.
The movement was started after an episode of the controversial animated show South Park advocated "Kick a Ginger" day Nov. 20.
The episode refers to red-headed people as "nasty" and "born with a disease."
Ottawa mother Juanita McNairn said she let her 13-year-old son stay home Thursday because he was so afraid.
"My son was beside himself," said McNairn. "He was delaying getting out of bed and when it came down to the crunch he just burst into tears and told me about the whole ginger thing."
McNairn said the students in her son's class told him all week they were planning to kick him when he arrived at school.
Anti-bullying advocate Rob Frenette said he was shocked when he found out about the group.
"We are very taken back that students would pick a certain group of people to harass due to their hair color," he told CTV News from New Brunswick.
Frenette said attacking someone based on their physical appearance could be considered a hate crime. He adds that social networking sites like Facebook that allow young people to group quickly makes a potential problem escalate quickly.
"This is definitely something that is growing globally unfortunately," said Frenette. "I think this needs to be looked at closely and quickly before it gets out of hand."
Irene Lanzinger, the president of the B.C. Teachers Federation, agreed.
"This is sometimes excused as a joke and we have to make sure we understand that it is never funny or acceptable to harm or harass another person," she said.
Lanzinger said that even though most kids may treat the "Kick a Ginger" day as a joke, some kids may escalate the level of violence. But she says there can be an opportunity to use this day as a lesson for kids.
"Teachers can ask kids what they think of it and make it into an acceptable debate," she says. "It's a good way to encourage each other and kids will always come to the conclusion on their own that you need to be respectful of each other."

The South Park ginger kids episode was more about accepting people for what they are and ridiculing the intolerant for their hypocrisy. The only truth was the bit about ginger kids stealing souls. I know that it is true, because my friend (of 40 years) is a ginger.... |

I informed the school on Monday what was going to happen and I don't think they quite understood. I had to remove my 15 year old son from school today because he was being kicked so much and when he seen me he said he couldn't take it anymore. And also he has marks on his legs from this.I am kind of curious "what year are we in"? |

I'm a ginger and I know its wrong but I said if anyone kicked me that I'd kick them back twice as hard. Lets just say... I kept my promise... |

I think that if there are individuals that take a facetious event such as "Kick a Ginger" to the level of actually harassing someone who doesn't find it funny, then there are more underlying issues than whether Social Networking sites promote hate crimes. I am a Ginger Kitten (as we call it :P ) and nobody has harassed me. If someone gives me a mock or pretend kick then so be it. I am a proponent of anti-bullying measures, but I sure hope that there isn't a large backlash against Social Networking from the "Mainstream Media" because of individuals who carry out actual abuse on people based on a joke based thing. Yes, I understand the other side of the coin; "What if it was kick a Black person day or kick a handicap" We, as rational people, should be able to differentiate between humor and hate mongering. Because there has been a history of extreme hatred towards dark skinned people, I can understand more scrutiny being given to that situation. That is my 2/100 of a dollar so far |

This is in a few places on the internet today. I find it quite amusing. So many in a flap over it but at the same time, I hope the gingers don't get hurt. I grew up a ginger and was picked on for my hair colour long before South Park came along. Kids will be kids. Bullies will be bullies. sigh. ... but if anyone kicks me, I'll kick back twice as hard. We gingers are strong and have cat-like reflexes you know... |

First of all im not saying that this discrimination is right but people do need to realize that like 90% of kids in that group are not taking it seriously. I would know because im actually in high school. I saw a couple redheads get kicked but never hard and not once were they not friends that would roughhouse anyways. I'm not saying its right but i know that at least in owen sound, we don't ACTUALLY hate them its all a big joke... |

Aren't we all forgetting the REAL meaning of November 20th? It's not "Kick a Ginger" day, it's the birthday of the International Space Station! The ISS turned 10 today. To celebrate I think we should have "Dress Like an Astronaut" day instead of this red-headed nonsense. |

alright this kick a ginger day was over exaggerated i mean at my school teachers were kicking other teachers its just a joke no one actually hates them because they are ginger no one kicked hard m sure there are a few kids who took it out of hand but seriously some people need to get over themselves my best friend is a ginger she thought the whole day was funny because it gave her an excuse to kick people back parents get over yourselves no one was hurt |

your kids are not going to get killed because of their hair color. LIGHTEN UP it's a freaking joke. 98% per cent of the kids involved are taking it as one. teach your kid how to take a joke, and remember when you were in school. Believe me, your child will be fine. Even with their lack of soul. |

Yes, if it weren't for Facebook all school children would be playing nice! I know it's true because I've been to that alternate universe... or not. Anyways, Kick a Ginger day is actually quite alright because apparently (according to CTV's article 8 days ago) "redheads are better at coping with pain" (see: http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20050812/ginger_hair_pain_050811?hub=BritishColumbiaHome). |

SouthPark is the problem but considering it's American free speech and the show is produced in the US there is nothing you can do. Sure, kick a ginger but you will be charged with assault |
Joe |
|
Wow... can CTV take the south-park episode any more out of context? Just a second... uh, nope... no they can't. Southpark is brilliant. If you've got an IQ above that of a yukon gold potato, you'll realize that south park points out the stupidity of racism. Of course, the intelligence quotient of CTV's producers is well below that of most ground dwelling plants... |

This is the best day of the year i totally agree with this day, if the gingers don't like they should dye there hair |

The problem is the idiot parents who let there immature kids watch south park. If they aren't old enough to watch it and realize it is just a show, then they shouldn't be watching it. Use your head. |

HOW can people support kicking red haired people? It's sick! Being a red haired person myself, I was kicked over a hundred times today! HOW can ANYONE justify kicking people because of appearance? Kicking somebody OUTSIDE of school can be legally viewed as assault. |

Let me guess, if we were to have a spoof "kick my dog" day, CTV would chime in with an OMG PETA and BROWN PPL, BEWARE THEY'RE MAKING FUN OF YOU!! |

I would like to say, as a member of the original facebook group "National kick a ginger day, are you going to do it?" that the whole thing started as a joke. Me and my friends are all avid south park fans and seen as there are two gingers in my friend circle, we started to tease them about it *jokingly*. Our ginger friends understand this and are fine with it. In my opinion, this has gotten way out of control and its horrible what has happened to some people today. Please believe me when I say this was not the intended purpose of the group. |

I am a proud Ginger. Today I was on the prowl, well aware that the racist/prejudice bastards would be out after my people! I was forced to defend myself against some true kickings. Three bloody noses and five devoured souls later, London Ontario is a step closer to a ginger friendly society. Gingers rise and stand up for yourselves!!! The world will soon realize that it is our unique set of genes that will save humanity from the future! Red and Proud!!! |

ahhahahah this is surreal don't you think!!! i can't believe that something so stupid escalated to such heights... what's wrong with a little kick? i mean i got wedgies and was pushed around a little bit when i was a kid, im not dead, when someone pushes on you push back that's t and most of the time the people doing the pushing will realize that you're not a push over and leave you alone. I mean in principle this is wrong because it marginalizes a group of people but i really wonder how many people actually went to school and kicked a redheaded classmate? Im just playing devil's advocate, but seriously aren't we pushing this a little too far? Anyways, bullying is a part of life and in a Darwinian point of view its survival of the fittest, this being said, it's impossible to eradicate bullying in schools or anywhere else in that matter because it is part of who we are as a species. So the real answer is to man up and go in swingin'. |

First of all, this was just a joke. I know because I go to a Jr. High in Calgary and there are a few gingers in my school. Most people kicked most of them but treated it as a joke, nothing harmful like you think. A lot of the gingers at my school treated it like a joke too and even wore shin guards. Surprise, surprise. Kids were just being kids again. Shocking, isn't? Parents are just too concerned about bullying, it is happening but it was one day as a joke. Calm down ! |

Okay, I just finished reading this article and I must say... could the journalist who wrote this article possibly take South Park any more out of context??! For pete's sake, if you're going to take the time to write an article for CTV at least spend the 20 min to watch the show that you're entirely misrepresenting. "The movement was started after an episode of the controversial animated show South Park advocated 'Kick a Ginger' day Nov. 20. " 1) The show never mentions or implies anything even close to regarding a "kick the ginger" day (even more so for Nov.20) 2) The show in fact seeks to expose the tragedy of discrimination in that someone could easily find themselves (or been born into) the position of the person being discriminated against. People are simply people, regardless of external traits. My last point is simply that neither South Park (which actually sought to show discrimination as stupidity) or Facebook should never be thought of as having more influence than good parenting, good schooling, good social values. Using a tv show and an online community as a scapegoat for the contemporary lack of social responsibility is both pathetic and sad. |

I am a ginger and got kicked 67 times today. Its all just fun I didn't get kicked hard, got chased down by a couple of older kids, I mean everyones taking this way too seriously Lighten up a little, Seriously. |

i think This was a great joke but people took it too far, and people who are trying to fix it are stupid, its not that big of a deal. many pepale in my school thought it was hilarious and it was all a joke, no one got hurt. Its a great day to Celebrate |

Southpark has a habit of pointing out the idiocy of racism or singling people out based on their differences, and teaching a lesson as to why it's wrong, not advocating said idiocy. People have always hated, and have always ostracized others for differences, even enshrining it in law or religious doctrine, so why should we be that surprised to see something like this? |
K Galan, Wiarton, Ontario |
|
This was no joke. My son was assaulted (that is how it is being treated) 14 times on Thursday. We had no idea of this horrific behaviour being planned. Mass behaviour is no joke. How many people through history have used the excuse "I was just following orders." Any groups come to mind? This activity was a hate crime and should be treated as one. |

This has been going on for years and no school ever took notice, nor the police. It was always " they're kids". No!!. These are people who are jealous of our beautiful hair colouring, freckles, don't turn white early - never grey, always look younger and have a very healthy complexion. Jealousy is the issue. No, we don't have a fiery temper unless you bullies start annoying us. How come movie makers prefer redheads, count the famous redheads in that profession. Jealousy has caused wars. |
a true redhead! |
|
Wow, such hostility towards red heads.. If you are a true redhead, you have grown up with the teasing, but then when you get older, everyone wants to be one of us. I think it's funny that it was kick a ginger day, does anyone actually realize that almost every redhead has a bad temper, and they won't take it for very long? We are a feisty lot, and you may have one day where we might let you kick us, but watch out for the rest of the year!! |

Well, I got a kick out of that SP episode! Unfortunately, what CTV neglected to point out about it was that it was ABOUT racism, and against it! CTV, you could have done a better job of making that point. |

You can't go around kicking people, we have laws against that, we should enforce them. As far as Southpark, a real journalist go ask Matt and Trey why they wrote the episode. My guess is that they chose/created a ridiculous idea to demonstrate the absurdity of *isms in general. Of course this was missed by many people. Just like "Blame Canada" was about blaming others rather than taking responsibility yourself. |

We smugly consider ourselves to be a kind and gentle society that values and protects peoples' rights to security, fairness and civility. Unfortunately, that is a myth. In our zeal to throw out all traditional values and the sources they came from we have unfortunately created a society where there are no absolute morals, standards of conduct or need for self-discipline. For the sake of our childrens' futures we parents and grandparents must take charge of their moral development by setting responsible examples and insisting that they follow them. Instead of poking fun at the obese man who lives next door, shovel his snow to keep him from having a heart attack. Instead of laughing at the kids on the short bus, we can volunteer our time to help challenged children and actively involve our own kids in the process. We can gather up groceries and have our kids help take them to the local Food Bank. We need to set ACTIVE and CONTINUING examples of caring and kindness because just writing a cheque to the Salvation Army won't teach them a damned thing about caring for others. Believe me, if we do these kinds of things, South Park and FaceBook will fade a long way into the background as influences on our children. If we don't break the "me first last and always" syndrome then things will just keep getting worse. |

Are some of these people serious? What if it was kick a blue eyed person day or kick a short person day? Talk about discrimination! I have teenagers and all they can do is talk about how discriminated against they are because of their age. Now this, and they don't even recognize it as discrimination. Just goes to show you how one TV show can have such an influence on children/teenagers/adults. Scary times! |
B. Kelley, Ontario |

To follow the logic of some posters this is all just fun and no one actually gets physically hurt so no harm done. Okay, since its such a giggle let's have more. How about Kick a Nerd day, or Beat up a Gay Day, or Trip a Blind Person Day? Maybe we could really get in the swing of things and have a Pee on a Pregnant Teen Day or Taunt the Twins Day. The possibilities are endless and what fun we could all have until its our turn to be on the wrong end of the day. Even if the victims appear to find it funny, you can bet your last loonie that deep down inside they are hurting because something about them has set them apart for ridicule and abuse. Bruises heal much faster than feelings. What a lesson in humanity this is. |

What the hell? Did anybody actually see the South Park episode? It has the exact opposite meaning of what they are claiming it to have. In fact, the ginger kids form a group and try to kill all the non ginger kids. |

It's really depressing when someone doesn't get the joke. The South Park episode was meant to satirize bullying and but the bully's see it as a call to arms. Maybe we should start rating shows based on IQ, if you are below a certain minimum you wouldn't be allowed to watch. |

Ms. McNairn gets my vote for the worst parent of the year. Tell the national media that your 13 year old son stayed home crying over KTG Day? I wonder if that increase his stature at school and keep him from being bullied? |

Am I the only one having a difficult time believing that a garbage show like 'South Park' is: a) watched at all, especially by younger kids (where are the parents?!?) b) used to dictate peoples' lives? I would really like to see the networks held more accountable for the utter garbage being produced on tv...this is ridiculous. |

Kick a Ginger Day? Was a good societal commentary in SP, but it should remain at that....a cartoon. I propose a "Beat a Dumbass Day". Anyone who kicks a Ginger should get swift and immediate reprisal from everyone in the area, then get charged for assault. Seriously though. I know some red heads, both adult and kids, and if someone dares kick them while I'm present I will treat the incident as an assault and will respond the same way I would if someone was trying to rob an old lady...go medieval on the guy's a**... |

I think it should be treated as a hate crime. I'm sure it falls well within the criteria I like Southpark but I would hate to see Eric Cartman used as a roll model as he also hates The Jewish people and if he was to say, promote kick a Jew day how would we deal with that? I'm sure some twisted little #$@%&*!!s would find that a fun joke and want us to lighten up! |

Learn to take a joke, seriously people try to turn everything into a big deal nowadays. Seriously what does it really matter anyways? We all know Gingers have no souls, so it's not like they are even a real person so who cares? |

I don't take this as a joke, and nor does my 12 year old daughter, with bruises and a cut on her leg from all kicking she received. My kids tell me there is a "kick a Jew day" coming up. How funny will that be, not. Or may be there will be a night where all the windows will get broken in our local churches or synagogues, how funny will that be, not. I think you can see where I'm going with this one, and if not maybe you should read up on some history. These things tend to escalate very quickly. The time to stop it is now. |

I bet everyone would think differently if it was kick a black kid day, or kick an Asian day, right, THAT would be wrong?...oh well, my daughter and I will take that day off every year and make it "redhead appreciation day" I just wont send her to school that day...kids are so mean sometimes, bullies suck...I got teased a lot for being a redhead as a child but it just made me stronger, and now as an adult you realize its unique and beautiful and people everywhere would dye to have my hair colour |

Here's the problem folks. Each and every one of you assumes that all in this 'joke' will have the same IQ you have. If that were the case this would be just light hearted stupidity. TV does not check first to see if the viewer has the capacity to understand subtle morals implanted within a well constructed comedic plot. Sometimes, as most of you have missed, there are twisted, sick, unintelligent, dangerous, evil, impressionable idiots out there that think the message is indeed that red heads should be considered 'not human'. Please don't' get me wrong, I'm a fan of South Park, I loved the Simpsons (when Conan O'Brien was still principle writer and the show was actually funny). I do not advocate having to control or censor for the sake of a few misfits. But at the same time I'm all for stopping stupidity. And the stupidity here is that the 'ginger' episode of South Park has gained life outside the context of the episode into a Facebook promotion. The Facebook promotion is not a unique piece of comedy, it's ripped off of a South Park episode and does not contain any of the social commentary that has been brilliantly woven into the original South Park episode. A group of dumb a-holes on Facebook have no idea what they are promoting and condoning by this action. Those involved should all be kicked themselves. |

In this day and age when bullying is a very real concern, I am extremely upset that supposed adults would write something as disgusting as Kick a Ginger Day into their story line. South Park has no commendable qualities and in this situation was the instigator for very real bullying incidences. It should be taken off the air. Are we a so plaicent society that we think the promotion of bullying is funny and acceptable? My family has experienced first hand what bullying can do and it made me sick yesterday when my son came home from school and told me about a classmate who was a target of Kick a Ginger Day. Young people may think this is a joke and all in fun, but unless you have been bullied, you have no idea how it makes a person feel or of the possible consequences. I am so disappointed in some of the previous comments. |
Anne Ottawa |
|
sorry Brennan but anything that smacks of kids bullying other kids is big news these days and should not just be disregarded. A girl just hanged herself in the US because of Cyber bullying so don't treat something like this, which could easily get out of hand, like a joke - some kids look for any excuse to beat up on another kid or shame them and it needs to be stopped hard. So I respectfully disagree with you. |

Yes, it is true, "gingers are feisty", and carry quite a temper. I know... I am one, my friends call me 0-60 Go ahead, kick me, but first, ask yourself, would you kick a grizzly bear? |

|
It's about time something was done about this! Thank you so much for writing this, it really needs media attention. It's quite notable that adults who are not as exposed to bullying, and people without red hair excuse this behavior as a "joke". Clearly, there are a large number of people who are taking it very seriously to the level of assault. As well as it has offended and frightened many people. Discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated and especially perpetuated by a world wide social networking site. It's disgusting and unacceptable. By saying things like "oh it was only a little kick" you are enabling the bullying, assault, and discrimination and being ignorant to what it actually is. There is a very fine line between joking, flirting and then teasing and then harassment and assault, and it has most definitely been crossed. |
