The B.C. government has announced an insulin pump program that promises to make life easier for young diabetics and their families.

The province will begin paying for insulin pumps for diabetics under the age of 18, as well as pump supplies for all diabetics.

The announcement was made on World Diabetes Day Friday by Premier Gordon Campbell and Health Minister George Abbott at a Vancouver elementary school.

The pumps deliver measured doses of insulin in place of injections, allowing diabetics to maintain better control of their blood sugar levels, helping reduce the chance of long-term complications from the disease.

They cost about $6,500 each and the program will cover 200 patients each year at a cost of about $1.5 million annually.

In addition, all diabetics who use pumps will now have costs covered for insulin reservoirs, which are disposable and must be changed about every three days.

The government says this will save patients up to $700 annually.

Health Minister George Abbott says by covering the costs the government is hoping to reduce the financial and emotional toll caused by diabetes.

B.C. Opposition New Democrat health critic Adrian Dix, who has diabetes, has been calling on the government to fund insulin pumps for children for more than one year.

Ontario, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland already cover the cost of insulin pumps for children through their provincial medical plans.

The Canadian Diabetes Association says the pumps save health costs over time by keeping diabetics healthier longer, especially children.

According to the CDA, every 20 minutes someone in B.C. is diagnosed with diabetes. It says one in 10 hospital admissions in the province are due to people requiring care for conditions resulting from diabetes, including heart attacks, strokes or kidney failure.

Pumping Insulin has changed our lives. It has allowed our son to have greater freedom from diabetes as well as eases some of the constant worry we have as parernts. Every child should have the option of pumping insulin, regardless of financial obstacles, they deserve to be kids first!
Better control of diabetes is better for everyone, including the medical system. My son Rocco is 5 years old, and was diagnosed when he was 21 months old and we have been pumping for 3 years.

Good for BC but it shouldn't be limited to children. Ontario covered the costs for pumps for children a few years ago and 2 months ago expanded the coverage to all T1 diabetics, resident in the province of Ontario. I have received one from the government program and in a short time has already made a difference. I have been T1 for 40 years and this is the biggest improvement in my life.

Keep pushing the government to expand the coverage.

This is wonderful news!! I am a Type 1 (27 years) Diabetic and my son, Tayten, who is 4 years old is Type 1 as well, and we are both on an insulin pump. The cost is huge but the price you put on your health and life is priceless. I feel relief that the government has finally started helping us Diabetics, who want to have good control, with the cost of it!! Yay!!

This is absolutely fabulous news! I have been living with Type 1 diabetes for 28 years and pumping for the past 8 - what a difference in my life! Hopefully the coverage will soon extend to help Insulin Dependant adults as well and the cost of the Continuous Glucose Monitoring sensors I use every 3 days!

It took the government over a year to improve the quality of life for TWO HUNDRED children? The interest on all the money sunk into Campbell's precious convention centre for the benefit of tourists is way more than what he'll be paying out for this.
It's a disgrace it took so long but it's just another example of where his priorities lie. Wait for a year so he can announce it near Diabetes day? .. get real Campbell!
