The mystery of the B.C. man who was struck by a car and then dragged 6 km by a bus Friday night deepened Sunday with revelations he had been arrested by the Delta police earlier that day.

The man -- whose name is being withheld at the request of his family -- appeared to be drunk but didn't sober up while being held at the detachment, so he was sent to the hospital, said Delta Police Const. Paul Eisenzimmer.

"He appeared to be in a state of alcohol or chemically induced inebriation and seemed confused," said Eisenzimmer.

But at 6:30 p.m. that evening, police were called to the Ladner recreation centre for a disturbance -- only to find the same man causing a commotion there.

Police offered him a ride to the Ladner bus loop, where he was last seen heading for a Vancouver-bound bus.

Later that evening, two people called 911 -- the first, from a driver who thought he had hit someone on Highway 17 near Ladner Trunk Road, but couldn't find the body.

The second was from a horrified bus driver who found the same man had been dragged under his bus for 6 km, through the Massey Tunnel and then into Richmond.

Identifying the body was difficult, and on Saturday inspectors had only a jacket and a shirt to go on.

Police are still trying to put together the last 24 hours of this man's life, and are asking the public for any tips that could help them figure out why he left the bus loop.

Both Highway 17 and the Massey Tunnel were shut down for several hours early Saturday, but they have since re-opened.
