Metro Vancouver's SkyTrain system was plunged into chaos Wednesday after a man, who was being chased by police, jumped out of his vehicle, ran into the Rupert station, and onto the tracks.

The resulting chase forced SkyTrain to shut down its busy Millenium line between Renfrew and Rupert stations for about 20 minutes.

However, after a brief standoff, the man surrendered  himself to police at 3.20 p.m. and service between Renfrew and Rupert resumed.

Before he entered the SkyTrain system, police say the suspect was driving a stolen vechicle, which had just been in an accident. Police were able to track the man with the support of a helicopter.

New Westminster Police Const. Terry Wilson said backing from the helicopter enabled police to take the suspect safely into custody. "At no time was any of our patrol members, or any patrol members from assisting police forces, ever involved in a pursuit,'' he said.

"It was observed from the air and again we always keep the safety of the public, the safety of the officers, and the safety of the suspect in mind when we are looking into stolen vehicles.''
